As the holiday season quickly approaches, New Jersey (like the rest of the country) finds its coronavirus cases spiking. Despite the recent game-changing news for the long-term that Pfizer has developed a vaccine with 90% efficacy, there is wide recognition that life is still many months away from returning to normal, as producing and distributing enough of the vaccine will take some time – likely well into 2021. In fact, Governor Murphy has already implemented new restrictions to combat the recent spike and anticipated tough winter ahead in New Jersey. But even though many people in the near-term will continue to limit their travel and to shop online, airlines and brick-and-mortar retailers are nonetheless preparing for increased demand over the next two months.
So what do you need to know in order to be ready for what will surely be one of the most unusual New Jersey holiday seasons in several generations?
The National Retail Federation is urging Americans to shop early and to shop safely. “We encourage consumers to avoid the last-minute stresses of the holiday season”, expressed CEO Matthew Shay. “Retailers are ready with inventory and sales, and there’s no reason to wait.”
In addition to shopping as early as possible, there are other things consumers should keep in mind. Many smaller New Jersey retailers who don’t typically rely on online sales have increased their digital presence in order to accommodate their customers this year. Check the website of your local store to see if they offer curbside pick-up or private shopping sessions by appointment. If you must go into a store during regular shopping hours, try to go during off-peak hours. And all the while, know that New Jersey’s small businesses have adjusted to the pandemic to make customers feel as safe as possible. Plexiglass dividers, sanitizing stations, and clear markings to ensure proper social distancing are just some of the new norms you will find at small retailers throughout the state.
